SHINING A LIGHT
Meet The Block Family
On February 19, 2025, Ryan Block’s life changed in an instant. A severe car accident left him with devastating injuries: broken bones, damage to his neck, spine, and hip, and a long road of surgeries and recovery ahead. What no one expected was that recovery would only uncover more complications.
Months later, after countless appointments and pleas to be heard, Ryan was finally diagnosed with a cerebrospinal fluid (CFS) leak, a rare, painful condition that now requires yet another surgery. His health has continued to decline, and his upcoming recovery will mean strict bed rest and even greater uncertainty about what comes next.
Ryan had always been the family’s provider, but the accident left him unable to work. His wife, Ashley, stepped in as his full-time caregiver, while also caring for their three children, ages 13, 11, and 2, and managing the home on her own. She applied for caregiver pay but was denied, leaving the family without income and facing the reality of losing their home.
“It would quite literally be keeping a roof over my family’s heads,” Ashley wrote. “It would take so much stress off my husband, who’s trying to recover but is horrified that we’re going to lose everything. It would also infuse hope into me — someone who is so overwhelmed as the sole caretaker now of him, the children, our pets, our home. Hope that I can save us when I’m already doing everything I can. I could use the hope.”

Ryan continues to fight for his health while awaiting further testing for possible cancer, a terrifying possibility that runs in his family. Through it all, Ashley remains steadfast, holding onto faith and doing whatever she can to keep her family together.
“When I originally applied, I shared about my husband’s accident,” she wrote in a recent update. “Since then, his condition has worsened. This grant would make a tremendous difference in helping us manage the financial and emotional strain we are facing right now.”
Despite the fear and exhaustion, Ashley’s story radiates the strength that comes from love and responsibility. The kind of courage that quietly defines hope.
